WAKING / Chapter 3
Chapter 3 begins with a stranger inheriting the consequences of someone else's actions.
At 4:18 UTC, Ilyan Seth wakes inside a poisoned body. The previous occupant is gone, but the damage remains. The chemical signature matches the substance used against Mara, bringing Elian, Mara, and Kai into an investigation led by Inspector Nadi Ro.

Nadi introduces the Courtesy Law: deliberately leaving harm in a vessel for its next occupant constitutes cross-identity assault. In this world, the body is evidence, but the newly awakened soul is the victim.
The investigation forces everyone to confront a difficult distinction: identity follows the soul, but the body must never be treated as disposable.

When a witness identifies a suspect through gestures rather than appearance, Elian experiences an impossible sensory echo connected to Liora Dane.
Nadi tests his unusual body-memory using objects from Liora's evidence bag. Elian recalls details he should not know, and his hands reproduce a precise sequence that activates an old archive key.
The key leads the group to a civic memorial bearing the inscription:
FOR THOSE WHO WOKE FOR OTHERS.
Behind the monument lies a hidden archive containing decades of unexplained Turning incidents.

Inside, the group discovers that certain soul identities repeatedly appear near historical anomalies.
One name stands out.
Dr. Sena Vey — 17 incidents.
The records also reveal that Sena worked with Mara's missing parents, Talen Sorn and Ilyra Sorn, on the classified Transition Blind Interval Study.

Meanwhile, a related Courtesy assault hearing demonstrates how the legal system separates a soul's responsibility from the condition of its temporary vessel. An adult defendant appears in a child's body, while Judge Arven, occupying a scarred vessel, refuses to let appearance determine guilt.
The courtroom delivers a central principle:
"The vessel will be protected. The soul will answer."

Then Kai discovers a much larger anomaly.
Every independent system loses exactly 43 seconds immediately before the daily Turning. The missing data appears not only in Veyra but across the world.
Sena initially dismisses it as an instrumentation problem, but Mara confronts her with the archived evidence.
The truth is personal.
Years earlier, Mara's parents volunteered for an experiment designed to preserve consciousness through the blind interval. Their bodies woke with different souls afterward, but Talen and Ilyra's Soulprints never appeared again.
Sena has hidden what happened for years.
And Elian may be the first person she has encountered who remembers the edge of that interval.

Outside the archive, tens of thousands of Permanence supporters gather peacefully to demand bodily continuity, family protection, and consent over the Turning.
Their grievances are real. Their desire for choice is understandable.
But an unknown saboteur exploits the demonstration, attacking vulnerable vessels with concealed darts and planting forged Permanence badges. Panic spreads as protesters and civic officers blame one another.
Elian recognizes the saboteur's gesture from the earlier witness testimony, connecting the violence to the ongoing investigation without revealing who is responsible.

After the plaza is secured, Nadi privately shows Elian a piece of evidence recovered six months earlier.
A black-silver shard.
A material no civic laboratory can classify.
Its engraving reads:
NO RANDOMNESS BELOW THE THIRD LAYER.
Elian touches the shard through a forensic membrane and experiences a memory unlike anything before.
Not a room.
Not a face.
Not a borrowed body's history.
A vast dark interval threaded with distant points of light.
Nadi asks:
"From whose body?"
Elian answers:
"None."

Chapter 3 ends with the mystery expanding beyond Liora's murder, the Courtesy attacks, and even the missing souls.
Elian remembers something no body could have experienced.
And nobody knows what the Third Layer is.
